Obsessive thoughts

polarbearsdrivingonhat-blogI painted this illustration years ago for Psychology Today. Scientists created a study based on the idea that once you tell someone NOT to think about a particular object, the subject will promptly only be able to think about that object. In this case it happened to be about polar bears driving around in cars. I think what I enjoy most about this illustration is the gleeful look of the polar bear (in the center)—it’s almost a nah-nah-nah kind of look as he spins around in the subjects hat (mind).

Potholders

potholderDoes this bring back childhood memories? Do you remember making these potholders?
The other day while driving down my street I spied four early elementary-age children huddled around a homemade stand with a handpainted sign advertising their potholders for sale. I stopped my car and approached the stand and greeted them. Two boys were busy setting out their products while two girls (one obviously the CEO of the company) were busy creating the potholders. I tried my best not to sound patronizing when I was asking about the potholders but golly, they were just so darn tootin’ cute about the whole process. The CEO told me the price of the potholders and then she promptly told me that all profits were going to the Humane Society. I think it’s the best three dollars I’ve spent in a long time.
I loved the whole interaction: their ambition, persistance, good nature and above all the beauty of their sweet potholders. Life is good.

Cooking up a storm

CookingThis is a vintage illustration of  mine that I did for a computer magazine—back when pc’s were huge and hulking and it was a novel idea to have one in your kitchen. My favorite part of this illustration was the idea that her hair could hold all of her cooking utensils, etc. I could have used this beehive hairdo today while I was cooking up a bunch of spaghetti pies to share with a friend. Happy cooking!

Vision is everything

mercuryvision-smaller2I wanted to make a piece of art for a neat young graduate who kindly served as a model in some of my illustrations within the last few years so I started a collage with an old 45 label I had lying around.
While I was working on the collage I thought of a quote from a wonderful pastor we had this year at our church who said his favorite saying was “Vision is everything”— and that made me think of this young man and the bright future ahead of him and how much he brings to it: creativity, insight, wisdom and a kind and gentle spirit. Congrats Daniel and to all the grads out there!

Observing artists as they create

chelaplayingpianoThis past Sunday I had the opportunity to sit, listen to & draw one of my favorite pianists. I had so much fun listening to her play some of my favorite tunes on a glorious grand piano. I’ve always loved music and while I never had the opportunity to play any musical instruments I love to watch musicians as they bring music to life. I love the intensity of their vision as they read the music; especially when the expression on their faces shows the delight and connection they feel to a particular piece. I’ve been watching this particular musician for many years and I delight in her talent and the gift of music that she shares with the world around her. (yes, you guessed it—she is my oldest daughter) I’m so blessed.
