Years ago I almost passed by the opportunity to become a mother. I am so glad I listened to that small voice inside me that told me to take the plunge into parenting. It’s one of the best choices I ever made. Sure, there’s plenty of hard work involved but as time goes on you get to know these little beings and day by day you learn more about them AND yourself as you help guide them through life. I’ve loved my daughters from the minute I felt them move inside me. I distinctly remember the day I felt C moving. It felt like she had her hand outstretched and I could feel all five tiny finger tips glide across her cozy nest. For whatever reason it reminded me of a line from a poem I’d written “…and it is a sky within me.”
With all those experiences and memories it was fitting to receive the drawing from C for my birthday. She totally captured the joy I feel when I’m with my daughters. The laughter, wild and crazy topics, serious thoughts and then more laughter. It all has a comforting roundness to it—like C’s drawing of us.
And then last night I received a belated birthday “card” from M. It was so worth the wait!
I burst out laughing with glee at how she captured my funny likeness—so good! And then I read the words underneath my mug, “ Mom’s Jar of Love.” I looked inside and found dozens of little slips of paper. Each one described why M loves me. Talk about words of affirmation! Yowsa, I am blessed!
For me, there truly isn’t anything better than a handmade gift from the heart. These beautiful creations along with a naughty (sorry I can’t share it but it’s great!) limerick from my hubby made this a fantastic way to usher in my 51st!
