Winter and all the snow and cold it brings can dampen ones spirits but the bright side of this kind of weather is that it foments all sorts of great works here in fly-over land. We’re starved for color so we pull out the paints and create luscious reminders of all the colors we soaked up during the warm weather months. Nice work M!

Starved for color

In the middle of one of the longest winters I am starved for color. There must be a name for this feeling—some medical definition that describes how after being surrounded by blinding snow for three months your heart|mind|soul yearns for bright yummy colors. That must be one of the reasons why I found this honey jar so mesmerizing yesterday. My sweet friend Pam gave me this wonderful hand-carved wooden spoon and I love how it leans into the jar: as if they’re two buddies walking hand in hand. Sometimes inanimate objects can just make one so happy…or am I just nutty from all the snow? Whatever the reason I’m lovin’ this warm colored honey with the perky little spoon. Looking for the beauty anywhere I can find it.

Snow shovel. Check. Ice melt. Check. Extra provisions. Check.
We’re about to get hit with 12 inches of snow and 50 m.p.h. gusts of wind tonight and these are the thoughts running through my mind as I batten down the hatches and hunker in for the first big blast of winter. That’s one side of my mind.

Here’s what playing on the other side of my mind:

A landscape full of beautiful warm water and lots of bright yummy colors. Sigh. I must admit the image in my mind is 10x better than this illustration (done for Minneapolis/St.Paul Magazine) but one can only expect so much from paint on paper.
Time to go shovel…!
